Yes, I like the new generation very much and I love Facetime! It can be used as a great accessibility aid when no immediate personal sighted assistance is available. Just call a friend, and point the camera at what your question is, and (s)he can tell you. It’s fantastic!

@Will, you may be right, but only if the record player is really good quality, and the rest of the stereo hifi also plays well with it.

For me as a blind person, vinyl records always are a bit in danger because so many things can put scratches on them that are not intended.

And there’s the pure practical thing that these aren’t exactly portable.

I would prefer an old retro record player, it is much cooler than an iPod. The sound of an old vinyl record is unbeatable in my oppinion.

Ah; sorry I have forgotten to add I am with you all OGG vorbis fans. Now Mozilla is even helping to spread it by adding support for xiph’s codecs into Firefox.

Stream seems to be really a good device. Unfortunately still there are too many places in the world where one can take no advantage of such a nice daisy book playback and ability to read text files. The problem is most daisy books are available in English only and still there is just a few languages supported by the shipped synthesizer.
Today I am using my cel phone to play some MP3 files on the go but still I am unable to read text files confortably in my native language. I’d be happy if eSpeak was ported to some platform allowing such portability. There were some attempts to port eSpeak for Rockbox but some licence incompatibilities have been found so the attempt seems to be abandoned. I am afraid we have to be a bit more patient to expect something useable for everybody regardless of his origin and preferences.

@James: I haven’t seen any mention of specific features for deaf users. I know that it offers a few low-vision features like high contrast modes. But I haven’t seen anything whether sub titles in video material are supported, for example. Best check out the Apple website and the iPod Nano 4th Generation description to get the most accurate answer.

Great post as usual Marco! I am also not ready to switch from my Vic but I do commend Apple for taking the step forward. I’d love to see a Daisy player for the iPod but I’m old, flabby, grey and needn’t have the hippest toys in town.

It might be personal but you most certainly are not alone there
There’s a list of players on the Vorbis site but I’m looking forward to the day when will it be in all players
